60 seconds to save the world
Climate science has always had a communication problem. And at Scriberia, we’re proud of the opportunities we’ve had to put the power of pictures to work on this challenge.
Just four years ago, a global strike to demand action on climate change would have been unthinkable. But the evidence for rapid climate change is compelling, and thanks to a chorus of passionate new voices, the world, it seems, is waking up to its collective responsibility.
So, on 20 September, 2019, people of all ages, and from all nations, took part in the youth-led Global Climate Strike ahead of the United Nations Climate Action Summit on 23 September.
Back in 2015, ahead of the now-famous Paris Climate Conference, The Guardian’s multimedia team commissioned a series of five animations with the aim of exploding a few myths and explaining a few lesser-known facts about climate change.
They posed a series of thought-provoking questions: Could China lead the way to a greener economy? Do you have to be vegan to fix the climate? Could drilling in the arctic halt climate change? It was precisely the sort of brief we love to get our teeth into.
Boldly designed and full of impact, the series performed brilliantly across the Guardian’s website and social channels. "Do you have to be a vegan to fix the climate?" - the third instalment of the series - clocked up almost 1.5 million views in its first 48 hours online, as well as more than 11,600 likes and 19,000 shares.
The Guardian’s commitment to breaking new ground in digital news media provided us with a great opportunity to demonstrate what can be achieved when great journalists and great animators put their heads together.
Meanwhile, in case you missed it, here's the Climate Fix series in its full glory. Now put down that burger and pick up a bucket of fried chicken - the world will thank you.
